A life-size statue of Sachin Tendulkar to be installed at the Wankhede

Ten years after the Indian cricketing legend retired from World Cricket. A life-size statue of the ‘Master Blaser’ will be installed inside the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai where he played his final game for the country. The cricket administrators are expecting to reveal the statue during the ODI world Championship later this year.

“It will be the first statue in Wankhede Stadium, we will decide where it will be placed,” Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) president Amol Kale told the press. 

“He (Tendulkar) is a Bharat Ratna and everyone knows what he has done for cricket. As he turns 50, it will be a small token of appreciation from the MCA. I spoke to him three weeks ago and his consent was received,” the MCA president stated.

The great Sachin Tendulkar has a stand named after him at the Wankhede stadium. Just a season ago, MCA determined to honour the former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar with a corporate box and batting whizz Dilip Vengsarkar with a stand. 

All over the country, there are not many live-size structures of cricketers installed inside the stadiums. There are only three statues of the Indian big-hitting great C K Nayadu at the VDCA Stadium in Andhra Pradesh, Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium and the Holkar Stadium in Indore.

There are various wax statues of players with stands named after them in their corresponding state associations. 

Many former cricket legends also have their statues at the Madame Tussauds in London. 

One of the famous statues of cricketers is that of Shane Warne at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. “It’s a great honour, it’s a bit weird seeing yourself up there but I’m very proud,” Warne had said at its unveiling in 2011. “It’s 300 kilos, that statue! it’s pretty life-like for when I played!”

Sachin played 200 Test games, 463 ODIs and one T20 for Team India. He owns the record for most centuries (100) and runs (34,357) in international cricket.
