New Zealand and Australia will now also play T20I series for Chappell Hadlee Trophy

The Chappell-Hadlee trophy which was earlier handed to the winner of bilateral ODI series between the Trans-Tasman rivals, will now also feature a T20I series, starting with three matches commencing on Wednesday in Wellington.

This change also implies that the two sides will square off in consecutive ODI and T20I series. A points structure including both the formats so as to avoid the scenario of the trophy changing hands within days.

It's great that the trophy will have more visibility and profile. I like the new conditions too - especially in the event of back-to-back 20-over and 50-over series," Sir Richard Hadlee said this on behalf of his family via a release.

Gregg Chapell  was “pleased” with this change. He said “I am a great believer in promoting young players through the pathways and national system and it will be particularly pleasing to see some young Australian players competing with their Kiwi counterparts for the trophy in years to come"

Deeming Australia-New Zealand rivalry one of the best in global cricket, Cricket Australia chief Nick Hockley said the Chappell-Hadlee trophy will now have “even greater relevance in years to come".

Scott Weenink, New Zealand Cricket chief said it's "important for the players, the fans and, in particular, the next generations coming through, to know where we came from and who we are."

"I'm delighted we're looking forward to the future but making a point of not forgetting the past."

The first Chappel-Hadlee trophy was held in December 2004. The reigning champions i.e. Australia have won the trophy seven times, while the Kiwis have got the better of their Tasman counterparts on four occasions. It was also drawn twice, including the inaugural series in 2004.
