During the first test between New Zealand and England, while putting to bat first, Ben Stokes-led English side declared their first innings in 58.2 overs after scoring 325 runs on the first day of a test match which left cricket experts and fans astonished. This declaration from England was the second-fastest in Test cricket history in terms of balls faced.

The stars of the day for England were Ben Duckett scored 84 and Harry Brook scored 89 runs as both nearly missed their well-made test century after scoring a run a ball.
Apart from them, Ollie Pope played also played a good knock of an inning of 42 runs. The skipper of the side Ben Stokes could score only 19 runs while Joe Root's poor form continues as he could score only 14 runs. Black Caps' left-arm pacer Neil Wagner took a maximum of 4 wickets for his side while captain Tim Southee got 2 successes. Wagner was the best of the Hosts bowlers with 4-82 from 16.2 overs.

The left-handed opening batter Conway resited the new-ball charge as he remained unbeaten on 17 along with nightwatchman Neil Wagner as NZ trail ENG by 288 runs at Stumps.
