FC Barcelona crash out of Champions League
It’s not a bad dream, Europa League is now a reality for FC Barcelona
There’s no greater humiliation than what FC Barcelona is going through at the moment. Even after appointing Xavi, their former player and captain, the Catalonia based club couldn’t save themselves from this embarrassment and will now play on Thursday nights in the Europa League.
Against Bayern, no one did fancy them for obvious reasons but not being able to beat Benfica in the 5th round of the Champions League is what will bug them in the coming times. They were completely outclassed by Bayern in the last game. Thomas Muller scored in the 34th minute while Leroy Sane doubled the lead just before the break and Jamal Musiala made it 3-0 after the one hour mark.
Xavi in the post match conference has said that the team will start from zero and Champions League is their priority. “We didn’t compete. This is the Champions League but it is our reality and we have to face up to it”. He added, “We are starting a new era from zero. Our objective is Champions League and not Europa League”.
Well, of course the objective is to play in the Champions League but the new boss of Barcelona needs to realize that the reality is far away. They are not consistent in the league and are in the 7th position in the La Liga table, six points away from the Champions League spot. Fans who follow the club know that the difference is tough to cover up. There are multiple talented young footballers who are all ready to dominate world football but again, they are not able to. You need experience in the mix to win or even do good in the crunch games, something that Barcelona needs right now. Signing Dani Alves is not the solution, but players who will win them games on a daily basis. After all, you can’t replace Lionel Messi with Luuk de Jong.
