Shakib Al Hasan ruled out of World Cup 2023

Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan has been ruled out of the competition due to a fractured left index finger. He will miss his side’s last match of this world cup campaign against Australia in Pune on November 11.

The southpaw picked up an injury during his 82 run knock against Sri Lanka in Delhi on Monday. According to physio Bayjedul Islam Khan, Shakib sustained the injury during the early part of his batting stint.

“Shakib was struck on his left index finger early in his innings but continued to bat with supportive taping and painkillers," Bayjedul said. "He underwent an emergency X-ray in Delhi after the game, which confirmed the fracture on the left PIP joint. Recovery is estimated at three to four weeks. He will leave for Bangladesh today to begin his rehab."

Shakib’s injury caps a frenetic 24 hours for him. Bangladesh’s three wicket win over Sri Lanka yesterday was highlighted by the incident between the Bangladeshi skipper and Lanka’s veteran all rounder Angelo Mathews. He initiated an appeal for time out against the 36 year old, who suffered a helmet malfunction and called in for a replacement. Shakib upheld his appeal which eventually resulted in Mathew’s dismissal making him the only player in international cricket to be deemed ‘time out’

Bangladesh have lost six of their eight games so far, putting them out of the race for semis. But they still have a hope of advancing through the Champions Trophy 2025; a top eight finish in the league standings would seal their berth. Shakib had a dismal run at the marquee event, scoring in single digits in three of the six innings he played prior to his match winning 82 against Sri Lanka.
