Ibrahim Zadran becomes the first Afghan batter to score a World Cup century

Ibrahim Zadran achieved an exceptional feat by becoming the first Afghan batter to score a century in the World Cup on Tuesday in a group fixture against the mighty Australians in Mumbai. The flamboyant opener, making his 27th ODI appearance, played 131 balls, including 7 boundaries, en route to his fifth ODI ton. He reached this momentous landmark by taking a risky single off pace bowler Josh Hazlewood, which resulted in two runs due to a careless throw at the stumps.

At the time of his ton, Afghanistan had scored 216-4 after 44 overs, having batted first upon winning the toss. A win in this match would confirm Australia’s spot in the semi finals. Despite being regarded as a surprise package in the competition, Afghanistan remain in the race for semis as they have won four out of their seven matches, including an upset over the defending champions England, a commanding win against Asian neighbours and former champions (1992) Pakistan, and 1996 champions Sri Lanka.
