Match 44: GUJ vs DEL

Gujarat (GUJ) will take on Delhi (DEL) in match number 44 of the Indian T20 League 2023 at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on Tuesday, May 2. The defending champions are in cruise control and are currently positioned at the top of the points table. Delhi on the contrary have struggled to get going this season. With only 2 wins from 8 games, Warner and co are languishing at the bottom of the table. 

GUJ have played like champions this season. They have clicked well as a unit and are deservingly at the top of the table. In the last game against Kolkata, they easily chased down a competitive total of 180. Vijay Shankar came good in that game and smashed a 24 ball 51* to secure a seven wicket victory for his side. In the post match press conference, the all-rounder hailed GUJ's cohesive environment and said it is one of the pivotal reasons behind his resurgence. What also makes GUJ as one of the formidable units in this league is their squad depth. They possess a pool of quality players who are very capable with both bat and ball. In the batting prowess, they have the likes of Shubman Gill, Hardik Pandya and Abhinav Mahanor at the top of the order. Then, they have big hitters in the form of David Miller, Rahul Tewatia and Vijay Shankar. As far as bowling is concerned then the reigning champions possess the threatening spin pair of Noor Ahmed and Rashid Khan, who have been effective in the middle overs. Mohammad Shami has been right on the money with the new ball and with 13 wickets in 8 matches is amongst the leading wicket takers this season. 

So, overall this GUJ side is operating like a well oiled unit and DEL will need something special to put a halt to their winning run. 

DEL haven’t made an ideal start to their 2023 campaign. They have blown hot and cold this season and are struggling to maintain consistency. The inability to close off games has been hurting them big time. In the last game against Hyderabad (HYD), DEL were in the game for the majority of the game but successive loss of wickets during the slog overs worked against them as they lost the game by 9 runs. The problem with DEL this season has been them not being able to perform well across all three fronts. When their bowling has done well, batters have failed to back them and vice versa. Ahead of Tuesday’s clash, skipper Warner will  want to address the discrepancy issues. DEL has also been unlucky in terms of having a stable opening pair over the 8 matches so far. First they paired Warner with Prithvi Shaw at the top but it backfired. Then, the management went with Philip Salt, who barring the last game hasn’t been amongst the runs. It will be interesting to see if DEL sticks with Salt at the top or opt for another alternative for this game.
