Preview 

Heavyweights Chennai (CHE) and Mumbai (MUM) will lock horns in match number 49 of the Indian T20 League 2023. Chennai’s MA Chidambaram will host this riveting duel on Saturday, May 6. While CHE have registered five wins in 10 games (1 NR), MUM also have as many victories in nine contests. 

The men in yellow will be back to Chepauk to face five time champions MUM as they search for a win to stay in contention for the playoffs. A win here would take Dhoni and co to number one in the league standings. In order to secure a win, CHE will need their bowlers to step up and come up with their A game. Deepak Chahar, who returned from injury, looked jaded in the last encounter. Dhoni would want Chahar to deliver and create serious problems for MUM batters with the new ball. The spin trio of Mahesh Theekshana, Ravindra Jadeja and Moeen Ali, who showed promise against LUC on Wednesday, will look to continue their good show. Looking at how MUM has managed to nonchalantly chase down 210+ totals, Dhoni would not want to put his side at risk by asking them to bat first on this ground. In the batting department, CHE have the likes of Devon Conway, Ajinkya Rahane and Shivam Dube. They would be looking at utilising the bowling susceptibilities in the MI camp and aim for a much bigger score even if they lose the toss and are put in to bat first. 

The visitors are coming on the back of two consecutive wins courtesy their stellar batting display.  In both games, MUM chased down 200+ totals with ridiculous ease. Toss could play a critical role here given MUM’s current batting form, CHE’s inexperienced bowling, and a decent batting pitch at Chepauk. Tilak Varma and Tim David have proved to be reliable finishers for the five time champions while Cameron Green and Suryakumar can lay a foundation in the middle overs. They will however be concerned about their woeful bowling form and in no way would they look to bat first winning the toss. MUM cannot demand their batters to hunt down 200+ totals in every game.
