Ind T20 League 2023

Match 54: MUM vs BLR

Preview

Mumbai (MUM) are set to host Bangalore (BLR) in match number 54 of the Indian T20 League 2023 at the iconic Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday, May 9. Both teams are coming into this match on the back of losses in their respective previous ties. MUM lost an away game to CHE whereas BLR was humbled by DEL. Both teams will eye two points to clear mid table muddle. The five time champions with 5 wins and as many losses are positioned at sixth. Their opposition is ranked just a rung above them with a 5:5 win loss ratio.

MUM has struggled to get going this season. Their skipper seems stunningly short of ideas, constantly chopping and shuffling players to find the right balance. As a bowling unit, they have found it difficult to function without Jasprit Bumrah. Jofra Archer, who recently returned from injury, hasn’t looked the same. A pacer who once was feared for his ferocious speed and accuracy has now become a bowler batters look to target. Other speedsters in the lineup lack quality and are fairly inexperienced. The spin department barring Piyush Chawla hasn’t done enough. As far as MUM’s batting is concerned then they have the likes of Ishan Kishan, Tilak Varma and Tim David who have set the tournament ablaze with their match defining performances. Suryakumar Yadav has grown in confidence with every passing game and Cameron Green has looked potent at three. The only persisting problem in their batting prowess is the woeful form of Rohit Sharma. His last four scores in the tournament now read: 3, 2, 0, 0. MUM will want their beloved skipper to come good on Tuesday.

BLR are coming into this match on the back of a crushing loss against DEL. Despite posting an above par total of 170 runs on the board, BLR bowlers failed to defend the total. Faf Du Plessis and co have blown hot and cold this season so far. It is surprising to see a team be so consistently inconsistent across 10 matches. They have struggled badly as a bowling unit conceding aplenty runs during the slog overs with little to no success. Mohammad Siraj has looked a potential threat with the new ball but has bowled injudiciously during the back end. Harshal Patel has been predictable with his change ups and pace variations and Wanindu Hasaranga has not been at his lethal best. Josh Hazelwood is a positive addition to this lineup. The lanky pacer can provide BLR with crucial breakthroughs and contain opposition batters. In the batting department, the visitors comprise the big three of Virat Kohli, Faf Du Plessis and Glen Maxwell. While Virat and Faf have scored runs, Maxwell has failed to maintain consistency. The middle order looks brittle with Mahipal Lomror and Dinesh Kartik in the ranks. Lomor finally repaid the faith shown in him by registering a half century in the last game and will be eager to continue his good show. Kartik on the other hand needs to pull up his socks and play an innings with substance. He is yet to fire this season and the forthcoming game could well be his final opportunity. Ahead of this crucial tie, let us have a look at how the two teams fare out on Tuesday.

Pitch and Weather Report

The Wankhede pitch has traditionally been decent for batting. 190 is the average first innings total on this wicket. The surface is on the drier side and there is little assistance for the quickies. Spinners can expect sharp turn if they hit the rough patches.

Match Prediction

Both MUM and BLR have faced ups and downs in their 2023 campaign so far and haven’t been in the best of forms. Considering their recent performances, we fancy that the hosts have a slight edge here as they have a formidable batting lineup. BLR on the other hand rely heavily on their top order to score runs and if they fail to contribute, the visitors are likely to crumble.

Top Fantasy Picks

Suryakumar Yadav: Over the years, Suryakumar has proved to be one of their key players. This year has been no different. Despite starting the season badly, Yadav has managed to raked 293 runs in 10 innings. He scored a composed 22 ball 26 in the last game against CHE in the recent fixture.

Piyush Chawla: The veteran has unarguably been MUM’s best bowler this season. With 17 wickets in 10 matches, Chawla is the fourth highest wicket taker in this edition.

Faf Du Plessis: With 511 runs in 11 innings, the BLR skipper is the leading run scorer in the ongoing edition. He scored a free flowing 45 in the last match against DEL.

Mohammad Siraj: The Indian international has been a revelation for BLR with the new ball. He has picked 15 wickets in 10 matches.

Risky Captaincy Choice

Rohit Sharma is our pick for this segment. The dashing opener has struggled with his timing in the competition and has mustered only 184 runs in 10 innings at a poor average of 18.4. This is not the first time when Sharma has encountered a cold streak. He has fought and ended his dismal run in the past and we expect him to do so once again.
