Match 24: RAJ vs GUJ

Preview 

With four wins out of four games, Rajasthan (RAJ) are comfortably sitting at the top of the table. Barring a critical point in their clash against Delhi (DEL), where their top order collapsed, RAJ have not been challenged much. 

They will take on Gujarat (GUJ) next, who are very capable of giving them a stern test.  Last year’s runner-up, might not have started their campaign with a bang. They have just managed to register two wins from five games, and have struggled to get their best playing XI yet. Woeful form and injury issues has made this potent GUJ side look unsettled. But they will be fancying their chances against RAJ whose head to head record against them is terrible with just one win in five meetings. 

RAJ, playing at Jaipur, will be hoping to seize this opportunity to dominate foundering GUJ and better their record against them. With both teams eyeing a victory, this contest should be a riveting one to watch. 

RAJ are sitting pretty at the top of the tree and it is because someone puts their hands up and delivers when the situation arises. When the top order didn’t click, Sanju Samson and Riyan Parag came together to stitch a crucial partnership to propel their side to a competitive total. Parag, in particular, has been a revelation for RAJ this season. He is batting with great maturity. It brings us joy to see a youngster who last year was seen as a total failure bounce back from slumber and emerge as one of the main men this season. 

Ravichandran Ashwin coming early to bat against DEL is a testament of RAJ’s flexibility as a batting unit. Walking into bat when RAJ were under a bit of pressure at 36/3, Ashwin launched a counterattack against the likes of Nortje and Kuldeep and provided RAJ’s sluggish innings a jumpstart that saw them finish at 185. He hasn’t been much amongst the wickets, but has still contributed to the team's cause in one way or the other, be it scoring runs at a brisk pace or containing the opposition batters. 

Jos Buttler, who the team management kept backing despite a string of appalling performances finally fired in the game against Bengaluru (BLR). The wicket keeper’s 58 ball hundred trumped Virat Kohli's ton from the first innings as the table toppers handed BLR their third consecutive loss.  

Their bowlers have bowled well in tandem. The new ball pair of Boult and Burger have done well in the power play with their seam and swing , Chahal and Ashwin have combined together to keep the opposition batters in check during the middle overs and Avesh Khan has flourished well in the ‘death overs specialist’ role.

With two wins in five matches, this by far has been GUJ’s worst starts to any campaign in the Indian T20 League. They retained the majority of their players between seasons, but somehow have struggled to work out a way to get back in the rhythm and begin dominating the opposition. 

GUJ had a narrow escape against MUM in their opening tie against Mumbai at Ahmedabad, where they had a collective failure during a relatively easy run chase. But they were remarkable in their win against HYD, which is the only match where we saw them being clinical on all three fronts. Their bowlers bowled as per their field and did exceptionally well to subdue the HYD’s explosive batting lineup at home, and then their batters made lightwork of the run chase. 

Apart from that, GUJ has been simply ordinary. Gill found some form with a splendid 89 off 48 balls against PUN, but their bowlers failed to see off the game allowing Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma to pull off an incredible heist with late blitzkrieg that changed the match in just a space of two overs. They will be in desperate need of a win on Wednesday  as the race for a top four finish is hotting up.
