Ind T20 League 2024

Match 13: DEL vs CHE

Preview

Chennai (CHE) and Delhi (DEL) will lock horns in match number 13 of Indian T20 League 2024 at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium, Visakhapatnam on Sunday, March 31

DEL will be looking to revamp their struggling batting order by including the dynamic Prithvi Shaw in their lineup against defending champions CHE in what is expected to be an uneven contest in the upcoming Indian Premier League match on Sunday.

In the T20 format, reputations often count for little, but DEL has failed to overcome CHE in their last four encounters, suffering defeats by significant margins of 91, 27, and 77 runs respectively. These losses paint a bleak picture for DEL.

It's worth noting that in these heavy defeats, DEL's core team has remained largely unchanged, except for their last meeting when Rishabh Pant was unavailable. Therefore, a victory against CHE would be seen as a major upset in the tournament.

While CHE appears to be the team to beat with a well-rounded squad, the same cannot be said for the Ricky Ponting-coached DEL, who have been outplayed in both batting and bowling departments. The team composition of DEL, decided by their owners GMR and JSW at the auction, has been a mess for years, leaving little room for Ponting or Director of Cricket Sourav Ganguly to work with the domestic talent that lacks quality.

CHE made a shrewd move by acquiring uncapped player Sameer Rizvi for a hefty sum of Rs 8.40 crore, and his impressive debut innings against Punjab Kings, where he hit two sixes, justified the franchise's desperation to sign him.

Among all the franchises, DEL has arguably struggled the most with their talent scouting program, and they are paying a heavy price for it. The gap between domestic cricket and the Ind T20 League has once again been exposed, as demonstrated by Ricky Bhui, the highest scorer in the recent Ranji Trophy season with 902 runs, performing poorly in their last game. Bhui's inadequacy at this level was brutally exposed by young South African paceman Nandre Burger of Rajasthan Royals, who used a well-executed plan to unsettle and intimidate Bhui.

Prithvi Shaw, who made a comeback to competitive cricket during the latter half of the Ranji Trophy, may not meet Ponting's fitness standards, but even the most experienced players in the DEL's dressing room know that Shaw is a better choice than Bhui. The burden on David Warner, who is past his prime, and captain Pant, who is still finding his rhythm, is immense. Mitchell Marsh's consistency with DEL over the past two seasons has been questionable, and Shaw's inclusion would undoubtedly add firepower to their batting lineup against the likes of Mustafizur Rahman, Deepak Chahar, Matheesha Pathirana, and Ravindra Jadeja.

Additionally, CHE possesses Daryl Mitchell's seam bowling and Rachin Ravindra, whose potential as a bowler has yet to be fully utilised by the team's captain, Mahendra Singh Dhoni. If DEL include Shaw, they can promote Marsh to the number three position, providing more stability to the top order. However, they will face a challenge against the cleverly varied cutters of Mustafizur, who can make life difficult for the batsmen.

One of DEL's concerns is the lack of quality power hitters among their domestic players, especially if Pant fails to perform. Moreover, there isn't much difference between Shai Hope and Tristan Stubbs, both of whom take time to settle before going for big shots.

The team's death bowling is also a worry, with only Axar Patel maintaining an economy rate of less than six runs per over in two games. In the recent game against the Royals, Anrich Nortje struggled to find the right length in the final five overs of DEL's bowling innings.

DEL will hope for the return of Ishant Sharma, who could pose challenges for Ravindra, as the latter has started the tournament in impressive form. The clash between Shivam Dube's power hitting and Kuldeep Yadav's spin will be a battle eagerly anticipated by cricket enthusiasts.

Pitch and Weather Report

Visakhapatnam is known for providing a typical Ind T20 League pitch that generally favours the batsmen, allowing them to build up high scores. However, despite this advantage, there haven't been many instances of teams surpassing the 200-run mark at this venue.

To date, a total of 13 Ind T20 League matches have been played in Visakhapatnam, and out of those, 7 matches have been won by teams batting second. The highest score recorded at this venue was 206/4, achieved by Mumbai against Delhi in 2016. However, the highest successful run chase was 173, accomplished by now defunct Pune in the same year. On average, in the first innings, teams have managed to score around 158 runs, whereas in the second innings, the average score drops to 131. It's worth noting that no player has been able to score a century in the Ind T20 League at this venue.

The temperature in Visakhapatnam is expected to be around 30 degrees Celsius when the match starts, and it will likely remain consistent throughout the game. There is no forecast of rain, but the humidity is expected to be relatively high, reaching up to 78%.

Match Prediction

Delhi (DEL) is currently facing challenges with their bowling department as they have suffered defeats in both of their previous games. A victory in this match is crucial for them to enhance their position on the points table. To change their fortunes, it is imperative for their bowlers to regain their form and deliver a strong performance.

On the other hand, Chennai (CHE) possesses a formidable batting lineup and a stronger bowling attack. This gives them an advantage heading into the match. While we anticipate a closely contested game, we believe that CHE has the edge over DEL.

In conclusion, our prediction is that Chennai will emerge as the winners in this match.
