International Cricket Board rates Gabba pitch below average
AUS vs SA Gabba Pitch: The first test match of the 2-match test series played between Australia and South Africa at Gabba in Brisbane created a lot of chaos after the test match ended within 2 days. The Hosts won the match by six wickets after the Proteas managed 152 and 99 in its two innings of the Gabba test. The Aussies made 218 in their first innings with the help of Travis Head's 92 runs. The hosts took a 1-0 lead in the series by winning the match in just the sixth session while chasing the target of 34 runs. The Gabba's pitch was discussed more than Australia's victory. The result of the match came out in 145 overs, on which South African captain Dean Elgar openly expressed his surprise.
In a five-day game, no one in the whole world liked the decision to come like this within two days, except perhaps Australia. Although no other team in SENA countries except South Africa objected to this Brisbane pitch, the International Cricket Board thoroughly investigated it. The apex cricket body has given this pitch of Gabba a rating of 'poor to average' i.e. 'below average'.
Australia may have taken a 1-0 lead in the series by winning this Test match by 6 wickets, but the International Cricket Board is not very with the pitch which had nothing to play for batters and had been covered with green grass. The result of this match played completely on the green top, came to the fore after the fall of 34 wickets within 2 days. After the match, South African captain Elgar criticized the Brisbane wicket, saying, "I don't think this pitch was good enough for Test cricket."
The apex cricket board's panel match referee Richie Richardson released his report on the Gabba pitch on Tuesday, a day after the match ended on Monday. He considered the pitch to be 'worse than average'. He wrote in his report, “Overall, this pitch of Gabba was completely in favour of the bowlers. There was a lot of bounce on it and some occasions, the ball was seaming more than required. Few balls were staying down on the second day of play, which made it very difficult for the batsmen to build partnerships. I rate this pitch as "poor to average" as per the apex cricket board guidelines. There was no equal match between bat and ball here.
The venue has got one demerit point after Brisbane's pitch got a 'poor to average' rating. This demerit point will remain active for the next 5 years. In these 5 years, if the total demerit points reach 5, then this venue will be suspended from international cricket for 12 months.
