Man United cancel end of season awards ceremony after dismal campaign

Manchester United will not hold their traditional end of the season awards ceremony following a devastating campaign at Old Trafford. 

The club usually holds a dinner at the ‘Theatre of Dreams’ towards the end of every season to present awards including the ‘Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year’ Award. 

While the presents will still be handed out, the ceremony will not go ahead. It comes in the wake of United’s worst season since the inception of the Premier League in 1992. 

They are set to finish either sixth or seventh depending on the result of their game against Crystal Palace on Sunday and are almost guaranteed to record their lowest points total of the PL era. 

The awards ceremony has not been organised for two years because of the Coronavirus pandemic but it could have gone ahead this year after the restrictions were lifted. 

As per the sources the decision to cancel the awards bash was partly down to the players, who did not want to be seen celebrating after a terrible season. 

Bruno Fernandez is the reigning player of the year after bagging the award for the last two seasons. 

This season contenders include Cristiano Ronaldo and David De Gea with the winner decided by a fan vote. Ronaldo, who has won the award on three previous occasions in 2004, 2007 and 2008, has scored 18 league goals on his Old Trafford return while De Gea has once again been impressive with umpteen number of saves. 

The Spanish goalkeeper has already won the award four times including three in a row between 2014 and 2016. 

Nothing has gone right for the red devils in 2022. United have failed to qualify for next year’s champions league, faced humiliation in the Carabao Cup and FA cup. 

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer paid the price for their dismal show at the start of the season and was eventually sacked in November while interim boss Ralf Rangnick could not inspire a turnaround.

Rangnick will take charge of final park at the Selhurst Park before Erik Tan Hak will take over as permanent manager on Monday.
