Manchester United, Liverpool to initiate an educational programme to address tragedy-related abuse

Manchester United and Liverpool have come together to launch an education programme via their foundations to battle tragedy-related abuse, the clubs said in the build up to their Premier League clash at Old Trafford on April 7. 

In the world of football we often come across cases where fans go too far in order to mock the opposition club/player. Keeping this in mind two of the most prestigious English clubs jointly launched this campaign. The clubs time after time have condemned fans chanting in reference to the Hillsborough tragedy and the Munich air disaster to ridicule opposition supporters/fans, a practice that can even lead to criminal prosecution. 

“We fully support this event hosted by Liverpool and Manchester United and are working closely with both clubs to develop and deliver this education initiative," said Nick Perchard, Premier League Director of Community in a statement.

Besides the partnership with the league, the two foundations will develop a programme with a commitment to making it an annual part of their engagement across Greater Manchester and the Merseyside regions. 

Last week a Manchester United supporter was charged by the Police with reference to tragedy-related abuse towards Liverpool fans during the FA Cup quarter final clash on March 17.

Arsenal also handed out bans to three fans after they were found guilty to tragedy-related abuse during an FA Cup tie against Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium on January 7.
