Maxwell ruled out of South Africa T20Is

Australian all rounder Glen Maxwell has been ruled out of the T20I series in South Africa after he picked up an ankle injury during training. The veteran, who already has a metal plate on his left leg after suffering a fractured leg last November, exacerbated his ankle on the very same leg during Australia’s opening training session.

Following Maxwell’s injury, Australian selectors opted for a safety-first approach and are optimistic that he will be available for the three-match ODI series in India just prior to the ODI World Series. “We will monitor Glenn's recovery with a view to him being available for the three-match ODI series in India in advance of the World Series," said selector Tony Dodemaide.

Maxwell was not selected for the ODIs against the Proteas as he was scheduled to return home for the birth of his first child. Mitchell Marsh will lead the second string squad for the T20Is with the likes of Mitchell Starc, Cameron Green, Pat Cummins, Sever Smith, David and Josh Hazelwood also missing out. The three match series will begin from Wednesday, August 30.

Wicket keeper batter Matthew Wade, whose international future was uncertain having not featured for the national side since the T20 World Series at home last year, has now been called in as a replacement player.

Wade was not picked in the initial squad with the selectors instead opting for Josh Inglis. However, chief selector George Bailey asserted that Wade by any means would have been given a chance in the five match T20I series in India following the ODI World Series.
