Mayank Agarwal appointed Punjab skipper

Mayank Agarwal will lead the Punjab franchise in the Indian T20 League 2022. The 31 year old top order batsman, who has been with Punjab since 2018, takes over the role from KL Rahul who moved to Lucknow ahead of the Indian T20 League 2022. 

Agarwal has formerly been the vice captain of the franchise and even led the side in absence of regular skipper, Rahul last season. The talented opener was one of the two players retained by the franchise in the mega auction. The head coach of Punjab- Anil Kumble believes that Mayank will take the Punjab side to newer heights. He said “ Mayank has been an integral part of the side since 2018 and of the leadership group for the last two years. The new squad we selected at the recently concluded auction has exciting young talent and outstanding experienced players”. 

Agarwal, who has played 100 Indian T20 League games since making his debut way back in 2011,  has officially been named the skipper of an Ind T20 League outfit for the first time. Speaking on his promotion, the Indian professional said “I have been at Punjab Kings since 2018 and I take a lot of pride in representing this fantastic unit. I am delighted to be given the opportunity to lead the team. I take over this responsibility with utmost sincerity, but at the same time, I believe my job would be made easier with the talent we have at the Punjab Kings squad this season”

After a disastrous 2021, Punjab will be hoping the appointment of a new skipper will bring good fortune. They have built a strong team with great depth and balance. It would be interesting to see how Mayank utilises the resources.
