Premier League, Matchday 14 Talking Points
Liverpool wins the prestigious Merseyside Derby, City & Chelsea won thiers
What a fantastic display of football by the Liverpool side when the team was challenged by Everton on their home turf. Now, in the last few seasons, there’s no question that Liverpool are a much better and stronger side than Rafa Benitez’s side. With a massive scoreline of 4-1, the Reds registered their biggest win in the Merseyside Derby since 1986.
The team was dominant right from the first whistle and scored two in the first twenty minutes. That put Everton completely on the back foot. Jordan Handerson scored a brilliant goal from outside the box in the 9th minute and that gave Liverpool the lead and Mohammed Salah made it 2-0 in the 19th minute. Everton fans were not just disappointed but were furious and a lot of them left the stadium at the 20th minute mark.
Everton tried to fight back as much as possible and even scored a goal in the 38th minute to put one back before the half-time but post that, it was all Liverpool. Salah made it 3-1 in the 64th minute while Jota scored a brilliant goal to make it 4-1 in the 79th minute. He controlled the ball brilliantly, put it in the correct spot and powered it to net Liverpool’s fourth.
Everton is yet to win a match in the Premier League since September. The fans had enough and “Sack the Board” chants were stronger than ever. In the post match presser, the former Liverpool manager and current Everton manager Rafa Benitez pointed out, “I think anyone who could see the game would say that we made too many mistakes, and when you do that against a top side, you pay for it”. He added, “It is always bad to lose but when you lose to a team that has spent so much money and has so many good players, sometimes it is because you make a mistake and the other team is quite good”.
Rafa Benitez needs to realize that the fans know that the team has made too many mistakes and that’s why they were humiliated in front of their home crowd. All that the fans want from him is to rectify those mistakes. Whether that is happening or not is a big question.
Watford versus Chelsea was another great spectacle. It was expected that Chelsea would easily earn all three points but Watford had some other plans. Chelsea did manage to earn a victory but Watford played some brilliant football throughout. They could have beaten the defending Champions League winners if they had taken all the chances they created. Mason Mount scored one in the 29th minute and assisted one to Hakim Ziyech in the 72nd minute. Meanwhile, Dennis scored one for Watford in the 43rd minute as Chelsea won the match 2-1.
Manchester City dominated their game against Aston Villa, who mostly depended on counter attacks. Ruben Dias and Bernado Silva were on target as both the Portuguese players scored brilliant goals to win the game for City. Ollie Watkins pulled one back in the 47th minute but couldn’t inspire his team for more.
