Real Madrid – The Super Champions of Spain

Real Madrid bagged their first silverware of the season as the Los Blancos defeated Athletic Club Bilbao in the finals of the Super Copa De Espana. In the final, 36-year-old Luka Modric scored the first goal while talisman Karim Benzema made it 2-0 in the second half of the match.

After their match against Catalan giants FC Barcelona, Real Madrid faced a lot of criticism for not dominating the match against a weak Barcelona and that they didn’t have a lot of ball possession. Carlo Ancelotti justified the reason by claiming it was their way of playing and on Sunday, the 13-time European Champions showed what they can do by having the majority of the possession. Athletic Bilbao created few chances in the first half of the final but Real Madrid completely neutralized them in the second half and won the trophy once again!

A lot of credit goes to Luka Modric. The Croatian once again showed what he can do on a football pitch. At 36, where most of the players think about retirement, he is winning games for Real Madrid. “You can never get tired of winning”, said Modric after winning the match. Thibaut Courtois, the Belgian stopper was also brilliant last night. Towards the end of the game, Eder Militao was sent off after a horrible tackle inside the box. Courtois showed his game awareness and saved the penalty brilliantly to keep Madrid in the match.

In short, the club has played some brilliant football to lift the title for the 12th time. Ahead of a hectic schedule in La Liga and Champions League, the trophy will boost their confidence to do well in the rest of the matches and lift more titles. With this victory, Real Madrid Captain Marcelo has now equaled Real Madrid legend Paco Gento’s record of players with most number of trophies for Real Madrid. Both these legends of the club have now won 23 trophies for the club and the way Carlo Ancelotti’s boys are playing, one can expect that Marcelo will very likely overtake Gento and become the most decorated Real Madrid player in history.
