The 49-year-old Roberto Martinez appointed as the new head of Portugal's Football team

Neither José Mourinho, Bruno Lage, Paulo Fonseca, Rui Jorge, Zinedine Zidane nor Luis Enrique but the 49-year-old Roberto Martínez is the new Portugal Head coach. The Spanish coach, who left the Belgian team after losing in the group stage of the Qatar 2022 World Championship, assumes the position of the Portuguese nation after the departure of Fernando Santos from the Portuguese bench. Under the charge of Santos, Portugal achieved its first two titles at an absolute level, the European 2016 title and the first Nations Championship, 2018-19.

The Portuguese Federation has announced a press conference to present the new coach and, although he has not given it publicly, the chosen one is the former manager of Wigan and Everton.

Roberto Martínez, after the 2022 World Championship in Qatar, has received several offers from clubs and the Mexican national team. In addition, his name was among the candidates that the Brazilian Federation surveyed to replace Tite, but it has finally opted for the Portuguese project. Everything indicates that he will sign until after the 2026 World Championship.

The first goal will be to qualify for Euro 2024. Portugal has been drawn in Group J, along with Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iceland, Luxembourg, Slovakia and Liechtenstein.

The Spanish coach will make history with the 'Seleçao'. He will become the first coach in the Federation's 109-year history not to have Portuguese as his mother tongue. The previous 52 had Portuguese... or Brazilian nationality. Only two foreigners, the Brazilians Otto Glória and Luiz Felipe Scolari had so far sat on the bench.

Martínez won the Football Association Championship with Wigan in the 2012-13 season and the 2018 World Championship bronze medal with the Belgian team, which he has commanded for the last six years, coinciding with the golden generation led by Kevin De Bruyne who, however, he did not win any title.
