Rohit Sharma seems unhappy with bowlers performance in the first ODI against New Zealand
Rohit Sharma is not impressed despite having a thriller win over Kiwis in the first ODI
Indian captain Rohit Sharma acknowledged that his team "slipped up with the ball" after a 12-run victory against New Zealand in the first ODI. In the first game of the three-match series on Wednesday at Hyderabad, India overcame a late fightback from all-rounders Michael Bracewell and Mitches Santner to defeat New Zealand by 12 runs thanks to a superb bowling performance from the local boy Mohammed Siraj. His effort outweighed Michael Bracewell's heroic century and partnership with Mitchell Santner.
In the post-match presentation, Skipper Rohit Sharma said, "To be honest, the way he (Bracewell) was batting and the way it came on to the bat nicely, it was clean ball-striking. We knew that if we bowl well, we would be okay unless we really slipped up with the ball. Unfortunately, that's what happened. I did say at the toss that I would like to see us challenge ourselves, not quite the situation I expected but that's how it is,".
The captain also praised bowler Mohammed Siraj and Shubman Gill for their contributions to the game, specifically Gill's spectacular double century. "He (Gill) is going really well. The form he was in, we wanted to make use of it and that's why we backed him in the SL series. Free-flowing batter and it is quite exciting to watch. Siraj has been brilliant, not just in this game but in the red-ball, T20 format and now ODIs. Really good to see what he does with the ball. Executing what he wants to do and he is very clear about his plans. Which is how it should be," Rohit said.
India scored 349/8 in 50 overs to win the match. With a score of 208 runs, Gill led all scorers. Hardik Pandya (28), Suryakumar Yadav (31), and captain Rohit Sharma (34) also contributed some noteworthy innings.
With 2/30, all-arounder Daryl Mitchell was the Kiwis' top bowler. Mitchell Santner, Lockie Ferguson, and Blair Tickner each picked up a single wicket, while Henry Shipley claimed two wickets.
Indian spinners initially controlled the Kiwis, who were chasing 351 runs, and reduced them to 131/6. The Kiwis' opener, Finn Allen (40), made a significant contribution.
However, a seventh-wicket partnership between Mitchell Santner and Michael Bracewell turned things around. The hitters destroyed Indian bowlers all over the field. Santner also struck a half-century, while Bracewell reached his second ODI century.
However, after collecting early wickets, Mohammed Siraj assisted India in mounting a comeback by removing Santner for 57 and ending the 162-run partnership. Then, in the end, Shardul Thakur dismissed Bracewell for a heroic 140 off 78 balls, which included 12 fours and ten sixes, with 20 runs required in the last over.
India grabbed a 1-0 series lead after winning the game by 12 runs. Shubman Gill was named the "Man of the Match for his double tonne."
