Shubman Gill doubtful for India's WC opening tie against Australia
Shubman Gill likely to miss India's World Cup opener against Australia
Shubman Gill is suffering from fever, which makes him uncertain for India’s opening encounter of the 2023 ODI World Cup, against Australia in Chennai on October 8.
Gill was not part of India’s training sessions at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Wednesday and Thursday. The team management is hoping it is just a flu and nothing more.
"He is under the weather," the official update from the Indian Cricket Board said. "The medical team is closely monitoring him. We are hoping he gets better soon."
Gill is the highest run getter in ODIs this year with 1230 runs under his belt. He has registered four centuries and a half century in his last four ODIs.
If Gill is unavailable for Sunday’s tie, Ishan Kishan could open the innings in his place. The southpaw has three half centuries in the previous five ODIs as an opening batter this year, to go with a scintillating 82 against arch rivals Pakistan from Number 5.
