Portugal missed Cristiano Ronaldo as they lost their first game in the calendar year 2022 against Switzerland in the group stage of the Nations League on Sunday.

A game which started with an optimistic approach for the Portugal National Team soon turned out to be a nightmare in the very first minute of the game as the Swiss forward Haris Seferovic scored a goal just after 57 seconds. Although Portugal applied some late pressure including two scoring chances for Pepe. The 39-year-old captain played as a backup forward.

Portugal slipped to the second position letting Spain occupy the first place in the Group-2 with a 2-0 win over the Czech Republic in top-tier League- A.

Goals from each half of the game by Carlos Soler and Pablo Sarabia raised Spain one point clear of Portugal after four rounds of the game. The last two rounds will be played in September.

Portugal was unbeaten in five games this year. They started their campaign with two wins in the World Cup Qualifying Playoffs in March including a 4-0 win over the same Switzerland they lost this Sunday.

On the contrary, the Swiss team suffered a five-match loss since qualifying for the Qatar World Cup ahead of group rivals Italy in November.

Portugal before even missing Ronaldo got a ball in their net. Some quick passes by Xherdan Shaqiri linked up by right back Silvan Widmer for a dangerous cross found the Benfica striker who guided the ball in the bottom corner of the net through a header leaving Portugal with their first loss of the season.
