Theatre of Dreams turns into a nightmare as Manchester United go down against Wolves

When Ralf Rangnick was appointed as the interim coach of Manchester United, the fans were really optimistic as the German has been phenomenal in his previous clubs. Videos were trending on social media applications where Rangnick was saying how he has influenced the likes of Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel. However, when it came to his own performance, it has been very, very average. Against Wolves, United went down by a goal to nil but the performance as a whole was very pathetic.

David De Gea has by far been United’s best player this season. The Spaniard made some top saves throughout the competition and Monday was no different. He stepped up once again and rescued United time and time again. With Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailey out, Phil Jones was introduced by Rangnick. The 29-year-old was rock solid after being out of the squad for almost 2 years. There were a lot of expectations from Cristiano Ronaldo but CR7 was close to assist Wolves for a goal rather than scoring one for the team. Things changed in the second half when Bruno Fernandez was introduced in the game. Firstly, it is very surprising to see Bruno out of the squad as the Portuguese is the only creative midfielder that the red devils got.

Bruno created a couple of chances immediately but no one could finish it. His own shot struck the top bar denying United to take the lead in the 67th minute. Few minutes later, Joao Moutinho scored the winning goal that helped Wolves take all three points from the Theatre of Dreams. It was indeed a beautiful goal as Phil Jones’ clearance fell directly in the legs of Moutinho and his shot caught De Gea off-guard and with that goal; Wolves came up to 8th in the league with 28 points from 19 games. United on the other hand are 7th in the league with 31 points from the same amount of matches.

“We didn't play well at all individually or collectively. In the first half, we had big problems to keep them away from our goal”, said Rangnick in the post match presser. “The game showed that we have a lot of work to do. We had too many unforced errors. I don’t want to talk about individual performances of the players. It’s an issue of the whole team. It doesn’t make sense”.
