Virat Kohli breaks Virender Sehwag's record in the Border Gavaskar Trophy

The crowd at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi was energized seeing the local boy Virat Kohli scoring runs during the second Test against India. Feroz Shah Kotla being a slow-turning track was less helpful for the batters. Virat managed to score 44 runs in the first innings before getting out in a controversial DRS decision and then contributed with 20 in the second innings.

During this process, the Indian batter broke the record of former Indian player Virender Sehwag for scoring the most runs in Border Gavaskar Trophy. Before the second Test in Delhi, Virat had 1694 runs in Border Gavaskar Trophy and he required another 44 runs to cross Sehwag’s 1738 runs tally. Virat smashed 64 runs (44 & 20) in the 2nd Test and crossed the former run machine’s record in style as India won the Test by 6 wickets and retained the Border Gavaskar Trophy. The former Indian skipper presently has 1758 runs in 22 Tests at an average of 46.26 in the Border Gavaskar Trophy which includes 7 hundreds and 5 fifties.

India’s master blaster Sachin Tendulkar is on the top of the leaderboard with 3262 runs in 34 Tests at an average of 56.24 with 9 tons and 16 fifties to his name. VVS Laxman has 2434 runs in 29 Tests and Rahul Dravid drafted 2143 runs in 32 Tests are the other two batsmans’ who have achieved 2000 and more runs in Border Gavaskar Trophy.

Not only that, but Kohli is also the sixth-highest run scorer for India in Tests with 8195 runs in 106 Tests at an average of 48.49. He also became the sixth and the fastest batter in the whole world to record over 25,000 runs during the 2nd Test. 

The other stars to have smashed more than 25,000 runs across all formats in cricket are Indian exemplar Sachin Tendulkar (34357 runs from 664 matches), Sri Lankans Kumar Sangakkara (28016 runs from 594 matches), and Mahela Jayawardene (25957 runs from 652 matches), Australian icon Ricky Ponting (27483 runs from 560 matches) and South African legend Jacques Kallis (25534 from 519 matches).

Team India defeated the Australian side by 6 wickets in the 2nd Test and sealed the BGT series 2-0, hence retaining the prestigious trophy. The third and final Test is scheduled to be played at Indore's Holkar Stadium from March 1.
