Rohit confirms Jaiswal to open, Gill to bat at three 

In preparation for the first Test against the West Indies, Indian captain Rohit Sharma has shed light on the team's batting lineup, clarifying a couple of positions that were in question. Yashasvi Jaiswal has been slated to open the innings, while Shubman Gill will move down one spot to No. 3, a position that has been vacant since Cheteshwar Pujara's exclusion.

Rohit revealed that the decision was influenced by Gill's own request to coach Rahul Dravid for a middle-order spot. "For the batting positions, Gill will play at No. 3. He himself has expressed his preference to Rahul Dravid, stating that he has predominantly batted at No. 3 and 4 throughout his career and believes he can contribute more effectively for the team in that position. Additionally, this combination benefits us as we now have a left-right opening partnership. We will adopt this strategy in the hope that it will be a long-term solution," Rohit stated during the pre-match press conference in Dominica.

Rohit emphasized the team's desire for a left-handed batsman, a requirement that has now been fulfilled with the inclusion of Yashasvi Jaiswal. "We have been in search of a left-hander for quite some time, and we have finally found one. We hope that Jaiswal performs well for the team and cements his place in the side. His presence adds diversity to our batting lineup," Rohit remarked.

Considering the venue's tendency to favor spinners, India has also made a decision regarding the bowling combination. R Ashwin is set to make his return after missing out on the World Test Championship final. "Based on the pitch conditions, it seems likely that we will play with two spinners and three seamers. Historically, spinners have had a significant impact on this ground, as evident from the last Test played here in 2017. Moreover, our practice sessions here have revealed that the bounce is conducive to our game plan. Therefore, we feel that a 3-2 combination will serve us well," Rohit explained.

The skipper expressed his satisfaction with the selection of young players for the series, acknowledging the efforts of the selectors in closely monitoring their progress. "I am glad to see these youngsters being rewarded with a place in the squad. While some players missed out this time, it's important to remember that we can only accommodate a limited number of players. However, everyone will have their turn. The addition of a left-hander like Jaiswal is a much-needed boost for Indian cricket, and Ruturaj also shows great promise. Gill has been consistently performing well for a year now, and we hope he continues his excellent form. Ruturaj has showcased his potential in T20 cricket, and now it's his chance to shine in the red-ball format. I'm confident that he is eager to score runs for the Indian team. It's always a positive sign for Indian cricket when such talented players emerge," Rohit remarked.

Rohit also addressed concerns about the team's relatively inexperienced pace attack, emphasizing the importance of workload management due to the demanding cricket schedule for Indian players. "Managing player workload is a challenge for Indian cricket, considering the amount of cricket we play. We must carefully rotate our players, provide them with necessary breaks, and ensure they remain fresh when they return. We also need to keep an eye on the future, with a World Cup approaching. It's not possible to solely focus on a single series; we must consider upcoming series and identify the players who are crucial for our success. This rotation allows us to provide opportunities to new players, building a strong bench strength. It enables us to assess how they handle the pressure of international cricket and how they cope with it," Rohit explained.

Commenting on the team's options for the bowling combination, Rohit mentioned the experience of Jaydev Unadkat, who has been part of the cricketing scene for a decade, as well as the consistent performances of Mukesh Kumar. "Jaydev is not a newcomer; he has been playing for 10-12 years since his debut. On the other hand, Mukesh Kumar has showcased his talent through consistent displays for his state, zonal, and India A teams. We will evaluate the circumstances and determine the most suitable combination to field," Rohit concluded.
